Johannes figured out a new way to rapidly assemble biomimetic β-ketopolyene thioesters. These compounds are valuable surrogates for biosynthetic studies, but unfortunately also highly sensitive and problematic in their handling. Key was the use of a one-pot reductive Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination for mild and step-economic backbone elongation and functionalisation. We additionally used the compounds produced for a biochemical study on the stereoselectivity of ketoreductase domains from giant multimodular polyketide synthases.
